What I'm reading, April 2014

What I read

Slow Motion by Dani Shapiro. A fascinating memoir-ish book by my new favorite author.

Knowing your Value, by MikaBrzezinski. If you work for The Man, you're probably not being paid enough. This book will help you work through asking for more.

Ready Player One, by Earnest Cline. SO GOOD. I devoured it.

Hotel New Hampshire, by John Irving. I went through an Irving spell several years ago and I don't know how I missed this one. A great novel, recommended by Kim.

A pile of quilt books, including Word PlayThe Quilts of Tennessee, and Tula Pink’s City Sampler.

What I'm reading

Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook, by Gary Vaynerchuk.

Quilting with a Modern Slant, by Rachel May. So good!

The Art of Learning, by Josh Waitzkin

Parallel Lives, by Phyllis Rose

Frankly, I've lost my reading mojo. Got a book suggestion? I'd love to hear it!

How about you? What are you reading?

I am currently reading a whole lot but in fits and starts. I’m halfway through “Missing Ink: The Lost Art of Handwriting,” “One of Ours” (fiction by Willa Cather!) and “The Worst Hard Time”. That last one has been a tough slog through the Dust Bowl. I’ve had to put it down because it has bummed me out a lot. In an effort to read something happier, I bought the ebook version of the entire “Hitchhiker’s Guide” series. Last time I read it I was in HS so I’m way over due for a reread. Perhaps you need something light, smart and funny to get your mojo back?

Yes, I think so! All the books on my To Read list (and the books that I can find at the library) are all educational and stuff. Jay just got another book by Douglas Adams from the library…something with “detective” in the title.

Oh yes! The Dirk Gently series. I tried reading the first one but I couldn’t get into it. I’ll try again considering I was 17 the last time I read it. It might be one of those cases of “older me” understanding/appreciating it more.
ETA: I read Mindy Kaling’s (of the Office fame) book and it was hilarious. I don’t watch “The Mindy Project” but she is now a celebrity friend-in-my-head. She’s really sharp, funny and well adjusted.

I couldn’t get into the Dirk Gently books either. BUT the TV series with Stephen Mangan and Darren Boyd is great! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2303367/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Books… I’ve just got out of a reading slump, helped by reading the next in the series of some of my favourites… Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum, Lindsey Davis’s Falco, and I started Ann Cleeve’s Shetland based novels, starting with Raven Black, and Elizabeth Moon’s Vatta’s War series.

Also read The Good Man Jesus and The Scoundrel Christ (Philip Pullman), and Joyland by Stephen King. Neither of which I loved, but am glad I read them. Next up is Donna Tartt’s The Secret History, and the next Amelia Peabody (by Elizabeth Peters).

And finally, non-fiction, A Very British Murder by Lucy Worsley, because I noticed how much murder/crime fiction I was reading!

I really have to check out Phillip Pullman. I did finish “Zealot” recently and that was a great look at Jesus of Nazareth vs. Jesus Christ. I’m not sure if I totally agree with the author’s opinion on some things but it was an easy and thought provoking read.

Yay! I’m in Quilting with a Modern Slant! Love Rachel.
I’m reading Kristin Hersh’s autobio called Rat Girl. (From the Throwing Muses) I’m loving it.
