What are the benefits and drawbacks of self publishing? Is it easier to market the book rather than have an agent dictate how to market? How do you get over (personally and to the public) the idea that publishing house/agent = legitimacy?

99% of publishers don’t do much to market. So either way, it’s on you to promote/market/get it out there. I’ve not really run into legitimacy issues because I’ve really focused on social proof for all my books (testimonials from people talking about what liked about each book). Hope that helps!

I agree! I’ve yet to work with a traditionally-published author who said their publisher dictated anything. Their role is (sometimes) to work on publicity (press releases, reviews, appearances) and (very rarely now) book tours.

Love this one, and LOVE Paul’s quote from the Bhagavad-gita — awesome!

This was a great interview Tara. Watching a day late, but gleaning all the same. I loved the comment about putting stock into what we are doing currently, and not stock in the results. My husband is totally a creative control freak, (and rightly so in his awesome copper art) and I am trying to be his ‘build relationships’ voice to let people know what we do. It is challenging and rewarding to hear what you and Paul share about doing what we love, and finding how to get that across.

Thanks, Rob! I know, that quote was perfect and it came out of nowhere! I wasn’t expecting him to whip out an ancient text 🙂

What else is he going to pull out of his hat!?
I’m a self-taught print/web publisher and am getting tons of juice and inspiration from him and his tribe! Yay!
