The Real Numbers of Creative Entrepreneurs
My goal with this project is to help makers see that they are not going "too slow" and that there are a zillion ways to make things work in a small business. YOUR story is going to encourage someone, so don't be shy.

Please fill this out if you sell what you make! Whether you're just getting started or you've been doing it for years. Whether you're making a lot or a little. Whether you make art, crafts, or designs.

I'll be sharing some of these individual case studies on the blog and podcast, so that other makers can feel not-so-alone, in a totally anonymous way (include as much or as little detail as you like). We won't judge or shame your numbers, but use them as encouragement and a reality-check.

REMINDER: Wherever you are and whatever you've done is perfect. You're doing your best.

What do you sell? *
Choose the thing that makes up the majority of your business. For example, if you're a designer who also teaches, choose the option where most of your time is spent or where most of your money is made)
How do you sell it?
Choose all that apply
How long have you been selling it? *
You may have had many businesses, but how long have you been in THIS business?
How long have you been dedicated to working on it as a business? *
(For example, I started selling yarn a full year before I focused on making it a business. It's totally OK if your answer is "not at all" or "yesterday")
Do you consider it a business or a hobby? *
Either one is fine!
What was your gross income from your business last month? *
(ALL the money you brought in, in one month)
Was last month a normal month? Were sales higher or lower than usual?
How much were your expenses last month? *
(anything you spent on your business)
What was your net revenue last month (income - expenses)?
What did you do with the profit, if there was any?
How did you track these numbers?
Was there a specific software? Or a piece of paper?
Clear selection
What aren't the numbers telling me?
How do YOU feel about the money in your business?
(No matter what it looks like to others, what do you think about it?)
Do you focus more on a  metric other than money?
What is it? Why?
What else do you measure month-to-month?
Clear selection
If you care about something more than sales, what is that specific number?
Ex, if you care more about email subscribers, how many do you have?
Where do you think most of your sales come from?
What kind of marketing do you do? How do you spread the word about your work?
Is there something in particular that you feel helped your business move forward?
A specific marketing tool, technique, lesson, or way of thinking?
Was there anything that you've tried that just did NOT work for you?
A specific marketing tool, technique, lesson, or way of thinking?
What's your goal for your business, big picture? Where do you want it to be?
What's the timeline for that? What metric will you measure?
How do you feel about your progress toward that goal?
What was it like answering these questions? How do you feel?
Did anything surprise you?
Anything else you want to tell me or other creatives about your numbers or your feelings about them?
Remember! If you didn't include your email address...
I have no way of answering any question you may have asked! If you asked a question you'd like me to answer, please put your email address in the last question!
