To be honest, I don't really like either option as far as the examples of the other shops that you posted. The first one (fabric) makes the jewelry just look dull against it. The colored backgrounds are better in comparison (so if I had to choose between these two, that's my choice), but I also don't think they really do much to make the charms…[Read more]

I prefer the paper — the small silver parts get a little bit lost against the b&w fabric in a way that the larger pieces on the site don't. If you're mostly doing stuff that's the smaller size, then the paper seems like a good way to really make it stand out!
Also, you can always try both so people get a better idea of the color & style from…[Read more]

Ok, I bought a new camera, so I can take pictures that are in focus now! So, please look at my two photos and tell me which one you prefer.
If I use the black and white fabric, all of the photos will be on that fabric, like in http://www.dianaslavin.com/accessories/category/jewelry. If I use the violet paper, I will use four different colors,…[Read more]

I'm working my way through Market Yourself, and I have made some incredible changes to my website (thanks Tara!). I've been wondering about a feedback page where I can include pictures and comments on my patterns, but is this necessary, especially when Ravelry exists? What does everyone else do?

It's tricky, isn't it? How can we get off the ground and find the first “right people” who like our style and can offer constructive criticism – or just a few ideas and thought about what we've designed so far? It's all very well asking a friend or partner, but if it isn't their kind of thing then it isn't their opinions we…[Read more] -
Dawn Craig replied to the topic Dyers and Designers – what is your model for sell kits? in the forum Engineering 7 years, 11 months ago
I've not sold them online just at shows but I purchase the pattern wholesale and dye the yarn for it and sell the kit.

Whatcha workin on?
Experimenting with photography. I like the jewelry backgrounds in these two shops: https://www.etsy.com/shop/hint (I bought some similar paper in 4 colors) and http://www.dianaslavin.com/accessories/category/jewelry (I bought some similar fabric). Unfortunately it looks like I'm going to have to buy a new camera. The macro…[Read more]

Do you partner? if so, how do you split the work? Who ships?
Designers, do you purchase yarn wholesale/retail and put the kits together yourself?
How do you price the kit? How are the sales split? As you can see, I have lots of questions. I would love to know how you handle these things.
Thanks in advance.

I have done a fair amount of 3rd party publishing, and I think it has added value to my career. Firstly, with some knitters I think 3rd party work gives me credibility as a self published designer. Secondly, there are a lot of knitters who don't hang out on Ravelry, so are unlikely to find my work there. 3rd party designing, Facebook and…[Read more]

whatcha' workin' on? Q3 plan revisions… the care meeting was informative and frustrating. In theory on Wednesday the 19th she'll be released to home care. I have mixed feelings… so we'll see what happens.

Amy Crook replied to the topic what are people putting on business cards these days? in the forum Engineering 7 years, 11 months ago
A bit late, but I just do email and urls on mine with the biz name. I use the mini Moo cards, so I don't even have my name, just Antemortem Arts!
I think if your social media is pretty easy to find on your website, it's easier to go from there to add than to try to load a card up with extra info. Back when I designed cards every day at a Copymat,…[Read more]

My goal this year was 15 designs by end of the year that I would package in a nice pamphlet, ready to take to my first TNNA in Las Vegas January 2018.
I find that the track I am on will give me 13 designs.
My other goal was to start a newsletter. I did that.
I did not have any $ goals for this year. I just wanted to build up product.
I had…[Read more]

I have been designing since the end of last year. I sell my patterns on Ravelry. I publish a monthly newsletter to knitters and crocheters, whose permission I have received, I post on IG, hopefully, as Tara and Joeli have taught me, I am in the process of having a KAL on Ravelry. I have submitted a couple of patterns to magazines but not had…[Read more]

I like it! (I like simple designs so it appeals to me.) Just enough information to remind me of what you do and where to find you but not so much information that I feel overwhelmed. (Which is how I feel when all of the other information is on a card)
As for the phone number thing, I think if you're a physical shop with regular hours that people…[Read more]

@riin-gill Your business card is lovely, but can you add some social media links as well, so if I pick up your card at a show, I can follow you? I have one name across the internet (knitalot924) so to save space, I put:

I find it really disruptive when people call when I'm in the middle of working, especially if it's more than just a yes/no question. I'm working. Let me get to your email when I'm ready to do THAT PART of my work. Besides, I get so many spam calls, I hate to answer my phone anymore unless I recognize the number.
