I think of these things as community-building, but I think you can also work in more direct business advantages.
Last summer I did a “Knitting Summer Camp” in a Facebook group (the majority of French knitters are on Facebook, not on Ravelry). It was just a series of tutorials. People participated by showing a photo of their swatches, and at the…[Read more]

If you feel your fun activities have to be tied to you business, why not think about it as an experiment? You do a KAL to enjoy yourself. Afterwards, you can check whether this influenced your business and in what ways.

I made a blog post about this!
Summary:
Make a “things I want to do list” instead of a “things I have to do list” (they are same things, just frame it differently in your mind.) Don't schedule things to get done, pick things off the list that you want to do. Trust that in the end you will get the important things done. I usually have a list of…[Read more] -

Joeli, I'm right there with you! It's interesting to try to balance “art I want to make” and “writing I want to do that can't be sold” with the constant demands on my time from my businesses.
I think you have to think about it this way — if you want to do a KAL for fun, then do it for fun, because if we never, ever let ourselves create for fun…[Read more]

I don't know what to call this topic really — “things I think about at 1am” might be a better title!
So there are a few things I want to do because I think they will be fun, namely a No Nylon Sock KAL (knit-a-long) and a “Know Your Sheep” SAL (spin-a-long). (And as a rebel doing things because they are fun and I want to do them is the best…[Read more]

Lisa, I will put in my next newsletter. I'm not in chat, so I miss it unless it is in writing–but I'm very responsive if I see it.

@jill-wolcott I did mention my new video tutorials in yesterday's chat, it would be great if you could share them. I only have two up right now (how to make a slip knot and how to cast on), and hope to have the next one (how to make the knit stitch) up in the next couple of days. http://www.youtube.com/user/LMBDesigns.
Thanks!

@lisa-barnes Did you have something you wanted shared–I thought I saw Tara share something. Let me know.

That made me remember that the same professor told us that when we were writing a linguistics paper we shouldn't write it for linguists; we should write it for our next door neighbor who knows nothing about linguistics. In other words, make it accessible.
I think I make things pretty accessible, but I'm definitely writing for knitters and yarn…[Read more]

I love that Redundancy quote. And yes, @tanja-osswald is totally right.
At the risk of being redundant: I was in a class telling students how to sell a product by talking about it in terms of how the customer could relate to it. I went off on this journey about saving resources, but it was so cute too, and I could use it in multiple ways, blah,…[Read more]

Be sure to write it all over your website, too! (not the quote from your professor…)

Whoa! You're right! I've read that people need to see an ad 7 times before they remember seeing it. And my favorite linguistics professor used to say “Redundancy lessens the strain on the human perceptual capacities.” He said it many many times, which is why I remember it!

Thank you, @veronique-vieillard-baron! Actually, I don't know exactly what my provider uses. The service guy talked about “Web Analytics” but when I googled that, that was not a specific program. I guess I should call them again…

As far as I know, it's a german speciality. My website is in french, but because I live in Germany, I have add the legal texts in german. The impressum and Datenschutz pages were clicked about 20 times in more than 3 years.
