@elaine-vandiver I was thinking a small butterfly shaped with your label or tag. Ten yards is plenty for them to feel and stroke. Or wrap it around your business card? Many vendors at TNNA do this type of sample.

I was going to check in last night, but we ended up being out until 9pm buying a car! I did NOT expect to move quite so quickly on this, and it's a different car than we originally went in to test drive, but it's newer, certified used, I loved the test drive, and even though the payment is higher than I had wanted, it's still manageable (and may…[Read more]

I going to lag behind from now on. Just did half of lesson 2 and next week, I probably won't have time for any work on CYM. But I'll put it on my schedule again for the week after that.

Thank you, @lea-ann-mcgregor! I was not looking at things from a business point of view, I realize.
I'm an independent contractor, i.e. I go there, teach, and we spread the announcement together. The only thing the LYS owner is getting out of it is that the class requires people to buy their yarn with her and that people check out her yarn store…[Read more] -

I am not that familiar with your processes or procedures, but I'm liking Mindmeister and MeisterTask for charting my business, breaking each main leg down into goals and then assigning tasks under that.

Hi fellow Captains, I'm starting up anew and offered a Mystery Yarn Club (MYC) to my subscribers. I had ten takers and while I can order a bag of ten from an existing yarn account, I would much prefer supporting an independent yarn dyer and/or designer, featuring on the blog, hosting the KALs on our upcoming website (clubKnit.knittingtoday.com) as…[Read more]

@elaine-vandiver, I had a better idea as I was unpacking supplies from a workshop. Quirky Bits'n Pieces does the cutest yarn cards in the shape of french dress forms. It made me think that you could do Alpacas–and maybe wrap the yarn around their neck or bellies. If they were laying down with legs folded, the neck would be easy to wrap and you…[Read more]

Are you paid as an independent contractor or employee? If you are an independent contractor, you have the right to teach wherever and whenever you want.
Are you teaching to put bodies in chairs for the new LYS or are you teaching to sell yarn? If its to sell the yarn, you'll want to use their yarn thus requiring new samples, etc. Your fees might…[Read more]

Katie, I hear you on the resistance. I took Abby Glassenberg's class which helped me get a vision. Now I just have it on my calendar like a dentist appointment. I usually do what my calendar tells me to do, so I just do it! Sometimes it is easy, and sometimes not, but the more I do, the easier they get.

I'm finding that right now I'm on the kind of journey that doesn't have a map. I joined the Starship to see if working with some structure would bring more success and enjoyment to my business. My previous business (selling & teaching jewelry making/crafty stuff) was no longer working for me and it was time to start over.
At this time I've put…[Read more] -

@tara I'm glad you like Caitlin and have a collaboration coming up. I'll tell my people/yarnie friends about it!
I don't think you should let yourself fall into the comparison trap – you each have your own style and expertise. I totally web stalk you both & learn so much!

@karen-robinson Thanks for your suggestions! I think one of the (weird?) issues I'm running into is that I really have a lot of resistance to firm schedules when they're external to me. No idea why. If someone says “You must show up at exactly X time every day!” I immediately hit the brakes.
Oddly, I'm a very structured person, and almost never…[Read more]
