Here's a vote against “Time Out vs Burn Out”. It has such dramatic connotations. If I got you right, you are planning something to help taking time off the business for whatever reason and out of whatever degree of urgency.
If I want to plan a two-week summer holiday, then I'm not going to refer to a “Burn Out” manual. But if I do read it, I'd…[Read more] -

Actually, I just learned that they first reserve sign-ups for the participants of earlier years. But if you are new, you can send the organizers an email and they'll put you on a waiting list. Some time in November, they'll open the remaining slots to every designer interested.

Customers haven't asked for them but I know they are bases that knitters and crocheters like… I don't know about the other customer related questions… They are different than what I have (I'm not carrying 2 worsted weight SW Merino)… but I don't know if there's really a hole either.
I won't be harder to manage because if I didn't dye the…[Read more]

I think this is a wonderful topic, Tara! I'm late to the party but I love Time Out vs Burn Out.
In my case, I dream of going to another country or at least a big city for maybe 1-3 months, either summer when things are slow anyway, or after holidays. I did spend 2 weeks in Montreal one summer, living in an apartment and discovering the city on…[Read more]

@dawn-craig,
I'd ask myself what I seek to gain from those things that I'm adding? Is it product that customers ask for? Is it a hole in your line? Will it allow you to reach customers not currently available to you?Also, can you manage more bases? Will it create confusion among bases? Will the additional work of managing more bases/color be…[Read more]

Storage isn't really a problem because I have a trailer to take to shows and I store it in there and under my stairs and still have other room in my basement…
Budget is what I've made already other than the bit we are investing with our taxes next year (thinking 400-600 depending on how much we get and what other things we want to do…[Read more]

I'm not a dyer, so I cannot give you direct advice. But maybe some questions to attach some numbers to things: How much storage space do you have? How much of a budget do you have for buying yarn bases upfront? How much profit will you make with each yarn base? Do you already have some data about which kind of yarn bases sell best with your…[Read more]

@katie-franceschi how generous you are in sharing such clear detail. Your focus is amazing.
I used to dye yarn, never as a large part of what I did. I didn't enjoy the process, though I loved seeing what I had finished!
Though I don't sell a physical product, your view on business is helpful.

Thanks for the clarification, @shelley-husband! I agree with the others, a weekly option seems like a big hassle to me as a customer. Besides, you'd lose money on the frequent transaction fees.
I'd certainly offer the subscription before January 1st, just for those who read about it and like the idea and want to jump on board directly. You can…[Read more] - Load More
