oh no! I'll look into it. Which browser? (I don't often monitor all the forums!)

Here's my compromise after struggling with it for a decade.
On almost everything (*excluding one type of project though I'm rethinking that for 2017) I charge hourly up to a cap that's about 25%-50% more than I expect the project to take at my worst-case projections. The client sees the middle of the road estimate on the proposal. I have language…[Read more]

I'm having my 2nd annual Sample Sale next week, and I'd love help spreading the word! I'll have a bunch of one-of-a-kind, limited edition, and overstock jewelry all on sale for 30-50% off.

Word sprints have really helped me — designating a 15-20-minute time slot where you're going to do nothing but generate words and, as Nessa says, don't edit. I can usually get my 1667 words in 3 or 4 of those, which makes it much more doable than trying to spend all day writing and getting nothing done (because there's no end to the ways my brain…[Read more]

Yay! Good luck Amy and Tanja! I love NaNoWriMo but with so much stuff I have going on right now I've decided to take a step back from it this year. My advice: do not edit, at all. Resist the urge at all costs. Just keep going forward and don't look back!

Whatcha workin on?
Currently, I'm crocheting more than writing patterns. Maybe I'll do a photo session tomorrow, but since the weekend is taken by a craft meeting, I could just decide to not get any serious work done this week.
Besides, I'm posting something to Patreon each day, I'm writing my six pages of novel each morning, and I'm seriously…[Read more] -

So you are a NaNo expert? Wow! Do you have tips how to really reach the 50,000 by the end of November?

Thanks so much @tanja-osswald @linda-tieu and @sarah-walworth — your insights are very helpful!
Yeah part of my own issue here is that if I charge package prices then I want to make sure I'm not working more than my desired hourly rate in the end of the project. My main reason for starting these new offerings is that I have some clients who are…[Read more]

That's what I'm thinking… I just need to work out how to market them better… Got some ideas swimming that I'm going to work on and I think I'm going to start CYM over and add this to my focus.

A hybrid payment structure you might consider is a flat fee for a particular service that includes x y z for up to n hours. And then charge by the hour for time overages. This allows the client to know what to expect and also how long a particular task will take. So if you are efficient, you have a profit cushion, but also you have a way to charge…[Read more]

I've been doing NaNo for years and years, and will be semi-participating this year to try to finish a project I've already got mostly written.
Good luck!

Hi.
I took a part time job at JoAnn Fabric because I had almost no work for several months. I worked there in 2003, and I like it now as I liked it then… plus, we have a much better manager now than then.
BUT: Now everyone wants us to sing for them. Scheduling is SO HARD FOR ME. My brain doesn't manage spots on the calendar well, it's like…[Read more]

For things like editing, I'd prefer to pay by the hour. Of course, I'd ask you for a time estimate before I'd hire you but it would still feel better to pay you for the actual work you have done – then I would not have to feel bad about asking you to re-check something.
For counseling stuff, like project planning, a fixed fee makes more sense to…[Read more] -

Hi captains!
I'm in the process of re-vamping my service offerings for one-on-one clients who are business owners. Basically, I need to re-do my website to include a description of these offerings so that I can begin to promote them, and I'm kind of stuck on the pricing thing.
With my regular clients, I charge an hourly wage. This makes sense…[Read more]

Having yarn available that other dyers don't have, sounds like a wonderful selling point to me!
If I read your answers correctly, there is nothing hindering you to carry those yarns – so why not just give it a try? -
Tanja Osswald replied to the topic Creativity or frog? in the forum Engineering 8 years, 7 months ago
Today, I started with creativity (writing for NaNoWriMo). I worked off some frogs after that but even those did not feel like work. Maybe it is just today but I have the whole month to test how the reversal works for me.:)

Jess Cook replied to the topic Paper printables and stationery for yarn and fiber lovers like you? in the forum Engineering 8 years, 7 months ago
Hey Linda!
Here are some things I know knitters/spinners/crocheters might like:
1. Gift tags, as someone else mentioned. Something that says this was handmade for you, here's the fiber content, here's how you care for it.
2. Some spinners like to use tags on their yarn to label it in their stash – weight/WPI (wraps per inch), fiber content,…[Read more]
