I have written a rough draft of an introductory post for my project for FB. Does this sound okay? I have it scheduled to post late on Thursday, so I have time to tweak things. Let me know if this sounds clear or if I should change anything.
Starting in January, I will be publishing a new crochet pattern every week. This will be quick to crochet…[Read more]

Whatcha working on? I'm about to cast on my latest sock design. Again. I've cast it on twice already. Also trying to devote more time to swatching so I can fill up my pipeline of patterns to be released.
What's going well? This week and last week have been so chill! The Husbeast and kids are home, so I've intentionally decreased my workload…[Read more]

Hey y'all! If you spin or know some fiber arts people, spread the word that the Visions of Fiber club is open to new members through the end of the year!

I use a corded lavalier mic that plugs into my DSLR (had to buy a little adapter IIRC for the camera as opposed to plugging it into my laptop or iphone), but a mic attached to the top of the DSLR sounds good. Would love to know what you decided on, Ann.

Would you ever consider making it a google calendar that people could subscribe to? You could even update it regularly. Just a thought…

Riin, I'm sorry to hear that you are going to close HFY, but it sounds like it makes sense for you. Happiness (and sanity) should be at the top of everyone's list. It is probably best to let your employees know sooner rather than later. Certainly the turn of the year is a time for change.
What about something like Handcrafted by RG or Gill…[Read more]

I am planning to release a new crochet pattern every week in 2017. These will be quick to make items that would be good to sell at craft fairs/ flea markets. So far, I have planned a schedule for doing this- Monday: new pattern of the week will launch Tues: decide on next weeks pattern and make sample Wed: Write pattern/ remake following…[Read more]

what's going well & whatcha' workin' on?
The box arrived late on Friday (after 6pm), my maths show I should have enough yarn and I'm making daily progress. Nervous, but I'll rerun maths later today.
I've made a few small modifications to how I track projects and that small adjustment means more focus. Which is good. I leads to more time for…[Read more]

Hi Riin,
I understand how hard this change is but when you are losing money every month it really is the best thing to move on. I did that when I closed my retail store a little over two years ago. I was using credit cards and household money to keep the store open. Finally decided after going to CGOA conference that all the other designers that…[Read more] -

Riin,
All really great responses. I knew this was coming for you. The joy hasn't been there and the changes are daunting. Honestly, I don't get why anyone wants to dye yarn; it is so much work! I love yarn, I love color, but geez, I am just exhausted whenever I try to do it. But, think of all that you have learned that you will carry forward with…[Read more] -

You're right. The industry has changed a lot. The boom was nice, but the bust is challenging to say the least. The good thing about jewelry is that if you choose to do shows then the set up is so much less cumbersome than hauling around yarn.
What about keeping it simple with R. Gill Designs, Gill Jewelry or maybe design your logo with…[Read more]

I'm glad you've come to a decision. You sound much more enthusiastic about the jewellery business than you have about HFY in quite a while.
I agree with the others. You can set your own timeline for the closure. You don't need to and should not draw it out in case HFY becomes profitable in a few months. If profitability was the issue you wouldn't…[Read more]

Riin, I'm sure it's a bit scary to be closing the business you know and moving into something new. But I also think it's going to be a big relief to you. It sounds like you've been “done” with the yarn business for a while. I think Jess said lots of great things above, so instead of adding more of the same, I'll echo the two bits that I think are…[Read more]

Jess Cook replied to the topic Spin-alongs in the forum Engineering 8 years, 5 months ago
Grace, there used to be a CTA spin-along on Ravelry that was huge – one dyer featured each month (I think?) and everybody would buy the same colorway and spin it. So I'd look that up for a reference point.
I think you'd just ask the dyer if she's in, and then you'd work together to come up with a theme. Like, what's the point of the spin-along?…[Read more]
