Thanks, @grace-shalom-hopkins. I feel like you, this is about respect. Actually, I am about to submit something to a different magazine. Much less reach and they don't pay well. But there are people behind this, not company lawyers and they just want the right to publish my pattern once in that magazine.
Thanks for sharing your experience, @annett…[Read more]

I think the question to ask yourself is: what can come out of it? What is my goal in doing this?
In my experience, being published in a print magazine will not generate more online sales. All it can do is build your reputation as a designer/fiber artist.
If this feeds into your overall strategy, then by all means do it. I think it can be…[Read more]

I have worked with fiber makers on this style of contract. You send me fiber and I will feature it in my book and share it all around. That was when I was smaller and since have revamped my approach because I want to feed the crafty eco-system.
However, for small maker to maker deals I still think this method is really valid and mutually…[Read more]

Am I the only one using this? I am working on a new way to present myself and my work. I got some really hard questions from my husband when I asked for his advice. Since then I have been working on what possible courses I have, and what I need to know from other people in the yarn industry to help me make this happen. I have appointments with…[Read more]

@tanja-osswald I'm happy if I am able to help your logical mind at all. I think it is often a matter of being flattered and then seeing all the things that *could* happen. My experience is: they never do. I've done so much work based on all the things that companies were going to do for me, but that never materialized. My motto now is I'll work…[Read more]

@karen-robinson Rights are a sore point with me. I could of course design something on a level that I would not mind to give away for free – but submitting something that is way less sophisticated than what I usually do is not a good advertisement for me, either.
The fee would not be paid by the magazine but by my yarn sponsor. Of course, I would…[Read more] -

Ah, the lure of exposure! @tanja-osswald this has been used effectively in the US to keep monetary compensation for designers at the same level as when I started in the industry in 1994. It isn't that it is wrong for designers to work for useful exposure, it is that it then becomes the standard. If you want to do this, then you need to decide…[Read more]

I personally would not design something and give all rights to a publication. But I know some people are okay with that, so I think that's the first thing you need to decide. Are you okay with that?
Is the fee negotiable at all? If you can show that your average self-published design brings in three times that fee, could you negotiate for closer…[Read more]

Thanks for the link, @lea-ann-mcgregor. My dilemma stays the same, though: Shall I give them all rights to the patterns I submit in exchange for exposure?

This week, a magazine editor contacted me. She had seen my patterns and likes them and asked whether I'd submit something for the magazine she's putting together. And I'm confused about what I shall do.
So, here are my pros and cons and maybe you can give me some input?pro:
* I get exposure. The magazine is sold all over Germany (plus probably…[Read more] -

It is sad that they are rubbing some bad aspects under your nose as a good-bye. But then, you will be rid of all this in a couple of weeks. And you can keep leftover yarns as you personal stash. 🙂

@jill-wolcott @tanja-osswald I have no intention of selling it all way cheap. I'm just pissed off by people who expect that I would. This is the second yarn store owner that has said they couldn't make a profit with my prices. I'm really glad to be getting out of this industry.
