Beaming words

Your beautiful work deserves to beam.

You’re a maker who has delightful products that customers love...once they have it in their hands. But online, your product descriptions just don’t entice buyers the same way holding your this does. You’ve written and rewritten, but you’re frustrated and tired and ready to not think about it anymore…but you know you need great product descriptions or your people will never find it. You don’t want to try to rewrite it again (because that’s not working!) but you also don’t want to give up on it entirely. You want a fairy word-mother to sweep in and make it clear and compelling and you.

You’re a creative genius with a rockin’ business (you design, write, or consult) but your funny, snarky self is getting lost on your website. Your shiny you-ness turns into stiff “copy” every time you touch your About page, newsletter form, or Hire Me page. Even if you’re great at writing other stuff, something corporate or timid overtakes you when you start to talk about yourself. You want your site to reflect the experience of working with you, without turning into a photocopy of every other aspiring creative everywhere.

You’re a curious guide with a new class ready for a batch of eager students. But you can’t seem to condense all the gorgeousness and life-change-y-ness of your course into an easy-to-understand class page. And you just have too many other things to organize, plan and implement before you launch it into the world. You want a page that caputres the attention of your perfect student, while still sounding like you – your tone, your voice, the you they’ll get to know throughout the class.

I believe

I believe the magic (in your biz) happens when you match up your specialness with your people’s wants + language.

I believe that the right words (matched with your beautiful work) make that connection between you + your person clear and easy, in a way that delights and benefits you both.

How and where you talk about your thing matters.

Powerfully describing what you do, and doing it in the right places, makes all the difference.
It’s the difference between a compelling sales page, and launching to crickets.
It’s the difference between one customer loving what you do, and telling all her friends.
It’s the difference between  having a newsletter, and generating sales with every email you send.

I know that you’re too close.
You’re standing so close to your work that you can’t see how it shines. And you can’t see how that luminosity attracts your best people. I’ve got my see-your-sparkles glasses on and a batch of the most-helpful questions, so I can see it and communicate it.

I know.

I’m a maker-turned-business explorer, who wrote the book on connecting your gorgeousness with your people’s wishes + dreams. I’ve written bios, articles, and Hire Me pages for a retail-focused tech start-up, a graphic facillitor, a big-business hiring expert. I’ve sat side-by-side with over 100 tiny creative businesses as we crafted their messaging, descriptions, and missions.
In our work together, I get to know you and your specialness, and I get to know your people and their language. Then I write what you need in your voice, with their language – so you still sound like you, but they know it’s for them.

“Tara always knows exactly what we (and our audience) needs. Whether it’s the perfect way to describe a new service, or the just-right angle for a press release, she translates our industry-speak into language our customers connect with. When we get tangled up in jargon, Tara gently unwinds us into real-world words. The whole team finds ourselves using Tara’s words we speak at conferences, write emails, or chat up investors. For nearly 2 years we’ve entrusted Tara with our brand voice, and we love how we sound. “

How it works

I ask the right questions – After you pay and before we talk, you fill out a deep-dive workbook about your work, your hopes and your people. Warning! This workbook causes epiphanies, realizations and sudden insight into what you’re doing and what your people want from you. Your product, services or courses will flourish with this new information, even before we find the words for them.

You pick – What do you want me to write? You pick from this list of 20 options.

We talk – On the appointed day, we hop on the phone, Skype or Google Hangouts for about an hour. I ask follow-up questions and we both get excited.

I write – When we hop off the line, I get to work.

You squeal – At the end of the day, I send you sparkly, you-filled words. You can accept them as is, or reply with a request for changes.

At the time I hired Tara, I was completely swamped with client work. I needed someone to fix my messaging without a lot of back and forth or direction. I was skeptical that I’d be adding more work to my already-full plate.

This is what happened: we talked on the phone for an hour and a bit later Tara emailed me a fully formed offer page for my website. That was it.

Not only did she distill and clarify the the main elements of my mission, she cut through the crap that was holding me back from explaining myself in a straight-forward way. I’ve started quoting her words directly when talking to potential clients.

The whole process was easy, low-pressure, and exactly what I wanted.
